Fellowship: Musculoskeletal Medicine, Interventional Spine Care, Sports Medicine, and Pain

This information sheet is sent to applicants interested in our Fellowship.

This is the PM&R musculoskeletal/spine/sports/pain fellowship for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ): New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). This Fellowship is on the academic campus for the UMDNJ/NJMS- Kessler residency program in PM&R. This outpatient fellowship is based at the academic medical center/teaching facility, in Northeastern New Jersey. The fellowship offers comprehensive training, including interventional pain management procedures of the spine and limbs, sports medicine, EMG, and general musculoskeletal care. Spinal interventions include cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral procedures, e.g. injections, blocks, radiofrequency ablation, and implantable devices (spinal cord stimulators, pumps). Peripheral (limb) procedures include joint injections, bursal injections, Botox injections, etc. EMG’s include complex plexopathies, etc. Procedural training includes an in-office fluoroscopy suite and a hospital-based fluoroscopy unit. Sports medicine training is obtained via treating athletes from local colleges (pre-participation physicals, office-based coverage of injured athletes, and optional game coverage).

Fellowship Co-Directors are Todd Stitik, MD; Patrick Foye, MD; and Boqing Chen, MD, PhD. Each of these faculty members is dedicated to medical education, and each has been singled out for a “Teacher of the Year” award from the residents and/or medical students. Each Fellowship director is triple-board-certified in PM&R (ABPM&R), EMG (ABEM) and Pain Medicine (sub-specialty boards via ABPM&R). Each of these faculty members publishes within the medical literature and Fellows are included in authorship of the publications that they work on.

The Fellowship Directors serve as team physicians for Rutgers University and also for New Jersey Institute of Technology. Fellows also receive training in running a "private practice," via spending via 1-2 days/week with faculty members’ off-site practices. In addition to the patient-care-based teaching, Fellows also have access to the didactic lecture series and conferences of our UMDNJ/Kessler residency training program.

The Fellowship is for 1-year, generally from July to June. Interviews are typically held by the preceding October-November, and offers are usually extended by October-December. Interviews typically include spending at least a day with the practice.

Meanwhile, "audition" rotations are not mandatory, but are very helpful. These rotations are held at our Newark NJMS campus, in northeastern New Jersey. For those without a car, there is train service to available to Newark from Philly, NYC, Baltimore, etc., as well as a free shuttle bus from the Newark train station to the UMDNJ:NJMS campus (free shuttle with UMDNJ I.D. card, which can be issued on the first day of rotation). MS. Browne can assist with requirements for rotations here (proof of residency, etc.).

Since slots are generally filled in the order they are requested, the sooner your dates are submitted the better your chances of getting your desired time slots.
